LAVC has recently been able to lease the home on Garfield Avenue which is the birthplace and childhood home of Medal of Honor recipient Desmond T. Doss. An event is planned for 2:00 p.m., October 12, 2019, to have a ribbon cutting ceremony for the second veterans home in Lynchburg. It was 74 years ago to the day that President Harry Truman presented the Medal of Honor to Desmond Doss Sr. on October 12, 1945. Mr. Desmond T. Doss Jr. will be participating. LAVC has received permission for attendees to park at the Tree of Life ministry building at 12th Street and Garfield Avenue and at Fast Mart 5 at 1400 Campbell Avenue, both of which are walking distance from 1309 Garfield. Fast Mart 5 is adjacent to the old Barker-Jennings building.
