LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — Local veterans and the community celebrated Desmond T. Doss Day Friday morning.
They gather every Friday for their ‘Support the Troops Rally’ and haven’t missed a Friday in over 20 years.
Thomas Current is the President of the Lynchburg Area Veterans Council and organizer of the event.
He said it’s all about remembering our history and what men like Doss gave for our freedom.
“It’s important to veterans like these men and women here to remember the price of freedom,” Current explained. “Without touching a weapon, he saved many American lives. He is so courageous, such a hero, such a person of faith, and he’s a Lynchburg native.”
Doss was a World War II veteran from Lynchburg and is known for his bravery as a combat medic in World War II.
He was also the subject of the film “Hacksaw Ridge.”
Doss passed away in 2006.
